Somewhere Your Brain
Actually Stops

You used to have something for the long days — a footy club, a training partner, a sport that kept you honest. Somewhere along the way, following the work or carrying the load, it disappeared. Now you're the bloke who looks fine on the outside and is quiet enough that nobody asks. Showing up to your own life without quite being in it — and some part of you knows it.

The thing that breaks that pattern is never dramatic. Cadien saw a mate in a photo and acted on impulse. Kerrod got a two-word text: good crew, come down. Toby's shoulder gave out and the routine went with it. In every case — a small crack, and a low-friction reason to walk through one door. What's waiting on the other side isn't a workout. It's somewhere your brain actually stops. The minute the round starts, whatever happened in your day is gone — something about a bloke trying to submit you makes the usual loop impossible to run. An hour later you're still in your gi in the car park, the conversation running longer than it should, and you drive home with nothing on the radio and your head quieter than it's been all week. And the blokes notice when you go missing.

Six years ago I was the bloke at 4:45am in the garage, deadlifts kicking me in the face, nobody in the room to push me the last 20%. A mate told me about BJJ. I made one of the best decisions of my life. That's why I built CGR Redlands. The bloke I was — fit enough but not fired up — is exactly who The First Five is built for.

Cadien. Job, Car, Girlfriend —
Gone in a Fortnight. He Still Showed Up.

Cadien wasn't in crisis when he found the mat. He was coasting — lifting weights alone, constant knee flare-ups from arthritis, not going anywhere. Then everything fell apart inside a fortnight. Lost his job. Crashed his car. Lost his girlfriend. Same two weeks. He still showed up. "I'd be at home and I'd be like, this sucks." But once the round started, none of it existed.

The thing that surprised him most wasn't the mental side. It was his knees: "Last year my knee was swelling. I haven't had a single flare-up since I started." Now he watches his old competition footage and laughs — "If that was me today, I'd easy destroy him." He's chasing his blue belt. Already eyeing purple. Not because anyone told him to — because for the first time, he can actually see himself getting there.

The First Five

$25
5 Classes · 7 Days · Deposit Only
  • Your Week, Your Way on the Mat — mornings, midday, evenings. Five sessions on whatever part of the timetable fits. The week bends around your life, not the other way around.A full week of unlimited training is $50 — you're in for half.
  • The First Class Sit-Down with Ben — twenty minutes with the owner on day one. What you're chasing, how the body's holding up, training partners who make sense for where you're at. Someone knows your name before the round starts.A private lesson runs $100 — this one's on the house.
  • Kit at the Door, No Outlay — show up in gym clothes, we've got the loaner gi. No $200 decision before you've decided if this is for you. Walk in with nothing and train anyway. Not a line item — just how we treat new blokes.
  • Coaching Scaled to You from Day One — the coaches adjust every drill to what you can actually do that day. The challenge is real, but so is the support. Nobody is watching you flounder and moving on.The same coaching members train under every week — included from minute one.
  • The Team 28 Onboarding Circle — a current intake of new starters going through the same arc. Same questions, same first taps, same early wins. Finish your first 28 days and the Team 28 shirt and sticker — $75 worth — are yours. What you put in for the Kickstart comes back on your back.
  • Your Call to Make at Day 7 — no auto-renewal, no lock-in, no awkward phone call to cancel. If it's not for you, it's not for you. If it is, the next step's already there.

The honest maths: a $50 training week for a $25 deposit — and the deposit rolls forward anyway. No inflated value stack. A week here costs $50, a private lesson costs $100, the Team 28 kit is $75 — every number on this page is the real one. The $25 is a deposit so the spot goes to someone who actually means it.

The deal on your $25: Do your first class. If you walk out and it's not for you, we refund it — no questions, no hassle. Stay on and finish the week, then continue to the 14-Day Kickstart, and your $25 rolls straight onto it — $50 for your next 14 days instead of $75. That's our way of saying thanks for backing yourself.
Why $25 and not free? "Because free doesn't get blokes off the couch. Book a free trial and there's nothing on the line — plenty never show. Twenty-five bucks is small, but it's real skin in the game, and it means you actually turn up. Turning up is the whole battle. And the money's not gone: hate class one and it comes back, keep going and it rolls onto your Kickstart. The $25 isn't the cost of trying. It's what makes the try real." — Ben

New intake every Monday — start at 5:30am, 11am or 6:30pm. Four new starters a week. That's it. Ben can properly onboard four in a week — the sit-down, the right training partners, your name known before you walk in. When the four spots fill, you're on the list for the following Monday. No countdown timer, no manufactured pressure. Four is just the honest number.

$25 → $50 → $50 a Week.

Straight Answers

The questions every bloke asks before he walks through the door. Answered by Ben, the way he'd answer them at the front counter.

Brutal answer: yes. Your first few weeks, your head will be swimming after every class. And you'll walk out with the biggest smile on your face saying to yourself: I should have done this years ago. Every bloke on our mat said the same thing.
Ha — no, you'll be fine. You're going to find muscles you never knew you had. That's the best part: it means you've started to train.
Age is just a number. The way we train lets you work at your pace — and we've got blokes older than you on the mat who'll prove it to you personally.
No, not at all. Our members love having new people on the mat — they remember exactly what their own first week felt like, and they love sharing what they've learned. Nobody's here to smash you. They want you on the team.
Yes. You work around it — same as you already do everywhere else in your life. Tell Ben at your day-one sit-down and the coaches will scale everything around it.
Absolutely. 2–4 sessions a week is the sweet spot for progression anyway. The five are there if you want them.
Everyone's got the same hours in the day. Time's usually not the real excuse — it's the cover story for starting something unknown. If I told you you were going to a PT session, you'd know exactly what to expect. This, you don't. That's the actual fear. It's also the reason to come. — Ben
No catch. The $25 makes sure you value the decision — and shows us you're not here to waste anyone's time. You pay a small amount; we coach you like a member from minute one. Both sides have skin in it.
After class one, yes — if it's not for you, full refund, no questions. After that, the $25 is your First Five fee, and it turns into credit toward the Kickstart if you continue.
Gym clothes with no zips or metal buttons. Water bottle, towel if you want one. Gi classes — we've got a loaner gi at the door. Heaps of onsite parking too.
Book — it's simple through our app, which you get when you start. One hour per class: learn a skill, drill it, test it.
Straight up: membership is $50 a week. No sign-up fee, no contract, unlimited — over 16 adult classes a week. Train three times a week and it's under $17 an hour of coached mat time — one PT session costs more than a full week here, and the more you train, the cheaper every hour gets. Only want one class a week? $35. And if money's ever genuinely tight, come talk to me — there's always a way to keep you training. — Ben
No mate — you've made a choice. We'll email you once a month with our newsletter so you know what we're up to. That's it. No calls, no sales sequence.
"You've watched all the vids and you already know — there's that small nagging part of your brain. Listen to it. Commit. You've got nothing to lose, and in my opinion it's the greatest thing you can ever do."
