From the blokes who walked through that door for the first time and stuck.
You used to have something for the long days — a footy club, a training partner, a sport that kept you honest. Somewhere along the way, following the work or carrying the load, it disappeared. Now you're the bloke who looks fine on the outside and is quiet enough that nobody asks. Showing up to your own life without quite being in it — and some part of you knows it.
The thing that breaks that pattern is never dramatic. Cadien saw a mate in a photo and acted on impulse. Kerrod got a two-word text: good crew, come down. Toby's shoulder gave out and the routine went with it. In every case — a small crack, and a low-friction reason to walk through one door. What's waiting on the other side isn't a workout. It's somewhere your brain actually stops. The minute the round starts, whatever happened in your day is gone — something about a bloke trying to submit you makes the usual loop impossible to run. An hour later you're still in your gi in the car park, the conversation running longer than it should, and you drive home with nothing on the radio and your head quieter than it's been all week. And the blokes notice when you go missing.
Six years ago I was the bloke at 4:45am in the garage, deadlifts kicking me in the face, nobody in the room to push me the last 20%. A mate told me about BJJ. I made one of the best decisions of my life. That's why I built CGR Redlands. The bloke I was — fit enough but not fired up — is exactly who The First Five is built for.
Why I built CGR Redlands. The garage at 4am. The mate who told me about BJJ. What walking through that door actually does.
Every member who shows up for 28 straight days earns the tank. These are some of the boys who've done it.
"You don't think about it at all. Your brain gets a break from almost punishing you."
Cadien wasn't in crisis when he found the mat. He was coasting — lifting weights alone, constant knee flare-ups from arthritis, not going anywhere. Then everything fell apart inside a fortnight. Lost his job. Crashed his car. Lost his girlfriend. Same two weeks. He still showed up. "I'd be at home and I'd be like, this sucks." But once the round started, none of it existed.
The thing that surprised him most wasn't the mental side. It was his knees: "Last year my knee was swelling. I haven't had a single flare-up since I started." Now he watches his old competition footage and laughs — "If that was me today, I'd easy destroy him." He's chasing his blue belt. Already eyeing purple. Not because anyone told him to — because for the first time, he can actually see himself getting there.
The honest maths: a $50 training week for a $25 deposit — and the deposit rolls forward anyway. No inflated value stack. A week here costs $50, a private lesson costs $100, the Team 28 kit is $75 — every number on this page is the real one. The $25 is a deposit so the spot goes to someone who actually means it.
New intake every Monday — start at 5:30am, 11am or 6:30pm. Four new starters a week. That's it. Ben can properly onboard four in a week — the sit-down, the right training partners, your name known before you walk in. When the four spots fill, you're on the list for the following Monday. No countdown timer, no manufactured pressure. Four is just the honest number.
The questions every bloke asks before he walks through the door. Answered by Ben, the way he'd answer them at the front counter.
